Create strong, unique passwords

Overview

Create strong, unique passwords instantly with Vault’s built-in generator.

Opening the generator

In the web vault, click the generate icon in the password field while creating or editing a login. (The browser extension also has a dedicated Generator tab.)

Password options

  • Length - slide to set the length (5-128 characters). We recommend 14+ (the minimum for your Heimlane master password).
  • Character types - include uppercase (A-Z), lowercase (a-z), numbers (0-9), and special characters.
  • Minimum numbers - guarantee a certain number of digits.
  • Minimum special - guarantee a certain number of symbols.
  • Avoid ambiguous characters - skip easily confused characters like 0/O and l/1/I.

Passphrase option

Switch to Passphrase for something more memorable:

  • Number of words - 3 to 20 (4 by default).
  • Word separator - the character between words.
  • Capitalize - capitalize each word.
  • Include number - add a random number.

Example output: Correct-Horse-Battery-Staple-7

Tips

  • Use a different password for every account.
  • Longer is stronger.
  • For something you’ll need to remember, use a passphrase.
