Create strong, unique passwords

Overview

Create strong, unique passwords instantly with Vault’s built-in generator. Available everywhere you need a new password.

Accessing the Generator

In the browser extension:

  • Click the Vault icon > Generator tab

In the web vault:

  • Click Tools > Generator
  • Or click the generate icon (⟳) when creating/editing a login

When creating a new account:

  • The extension will offer to generate a password automatically

Password Options

Length:

  • Slide to adjust length (5-128 characters)
  • Recommended: 16+ characters for important accounts

Character types (include):

  • A-Z: Uppercase letters
  • a-z: Lowercase letters
  • 0-9: Numbers
  • !@#$%^&*: Special characters

Advanced:

  • Minimum numbers: Guarantee a certain number of digits
  • Minimum special: Guarantee a certain number of symbols
  • Avoid ambiguous characters: Excludes confusing characters like 0/O, l/1/I

Passphrase Option

For memorable yet secure passwords:

  1. Switch to Passphrase mode
  2. Configure options:
    • Number of words: 3-20 words (recommended: 4+)
    • Word separator: Character between words (-, space, etc.)
    • Capitalize: First letter of each word uppercase
    • Include number: Add a random number

Tips

  • Use different passwords for every account
  • Longer is always stronger
  • Passphrases are easier to type on mobile devices
  • Generated passwords are saved in history for 24 hours

Troubleshooting

Issue: Website rejects generated password Solution: Some sites have specific requirements. Adjust the generator settings (length, required characters) to match.

Issue: Need to remember the password temporarily Solution: Use a passphrase instead - they’re designed to be memorable.
