Importing Your Passwords

Overview

You can import your existing items into Heimlane Vault from a file exported by your browser or another password manager. The import runs in your web vault, and your data is encrypted locally before it’s saved.

Supported formats

Vault accepts .json, .csv, .heimlane, .kdbx and .xml files, up to 10 MB each:

Vault auto-detects the format, or you can choose it manually.

How to import

1. In your web vault, open Settings and find Import Vault (or use Import secrets on the dashboard).
2. Click to choose a file or drag and drop, and select your exported file.
3. Vault detects the format. To set it yourself, use Choose format manually.
4. For an encrypted KeePass database (or a .heimlane backup), enter its password. KeePass can also take an optional key file.
5. Review the import preview: it shows how many logins, cards, identities and notes were found, and flags anything that looks like a duplicate.
6. Choose how to handle duplicates and folders (below), then click Import.

Duplicates and folders

When items match what’s already in your vault, you decide what happens:

• Skip duplicates, or import them as new items, and
• per item: Keep existing, Import as new copy, Careful merge (fill only blank fields), Full merge, or Replace.

For folders, you can match only existing folders, create the missing ones, or - for KeePass - keep the database name as a top-level folder.

Importing 2FA codes from Google Authenticator

To move your two-step codes, use Import from Google Authenticator in the Import section. It adds the codes to matching login items, and is separate from a file import.

Exporting from your current manager

Export to one of the formats above, then import the file:

• Chrome / Edge: Passwords settings > Export passwords (CSV)
• Firefox: about:logins > menu > Export Logins (CSV)
• Safari (macOS): Settings > Passwords > Export All Passwords (CSV)
• LastPass: Advanced Options > Export (CSV)
• 1Password: export your items as CSV
• Bitwarden: Tools > Export Vault > JSON
• KeePass / KeePassXC: the database (.kdbx) or a KeePass 2 XML export

Tips

• Delete the exported file afterwards - it usually holds your passwords in clear text.
• Split very large exports: the limit is 10 MB per file.
• Attachments are not included in most exports; re-add them after importing.
