Deleting Your Account

Permanently remove your Vault account

Overview

You can permanently delete your Heimlane Vault account at any time. This action is irreversible - all your data will be permanently destroyed.

Before You Delete

This action is permanent. Consider these points:

  • All vault data will be deleted forever
  • This includes logins, notes, cards, identities
  • Attachments will be deleted
  • Zone memberships will be removed
  • Premium subscriptions will be cancelled (no refund for remaining time)
  • Emergency access relationships will be removed

Export Your Data First

We strongly recommend exporting your vault before deletion:

  1. Go to Tools > Export Vault
  2. Choose your format (encrypted JSON recommended)
  3. Save to a secure location
  4. Verify the export contains your data

See Export Your Vault for detailed instructions.

Steps to Delete Account

  1. Log in to the web vault at vault.heimlane.io
  2. Click your profile icon in the top right
  3. Select Account Settings
  4. Scroll to Danger Zone
  5. Click Delete Account
  6. Read the warning carefully
  7. Enter your master password to confirm
  8. Type “DELETE” to confirm you understand
  9. Click Delete My Account

What Happens After Deletion

Immediately:

  • You’re logged out of all devices
  • Your vault data is queued for deletion
  • Your email becomes available for new registration

Within 24-48 hours:

  • All encrypted vault data is purged from servers
  • Backups are cleared
  • No recovery is possible

Zone Owner Considerations

If you own Zones:

  • Transfer ownership before deletion, OR
  • The Zone will be deleted with all shared data
  • Zone members will lose access to shared items

To transfer Zone ownership:

  1. Go to Zone settings
  2. Click Members
  3. Promote another member to Owner
  4. Then proceed with account deletion

Troubleshooting

Problem: Can’t find delete option

Solutions:

  1. Must use web vault (not mobile or extension)
  2. Check you’re in Account Settings, not Vault settings
  3. Scroll to “Danger Zone” section

Problem: Delete button is disabled

Solutions:

  1. You may be the only owner of a Zone
  2. Transfer Zone ownership first
  3. Or delete the Zone first

Problem: Changed my mind after clicking delete

Solutions:

  1. Contact support immediately (within hours)
  2. Recovery is not guaranteed
  3. Act quickly - deletion is processed in batches

Alternatives to Deletion

Before deleting, consider:

  • Export and keep account - Download your data, keep account inactive
  • Remove sensitive items - Delete specific items rather than whole account
  • Downgrade to free - Cancel premium but keep your vault
  • Change email - If privacy is the concern

Tips

  • Export your data first - always
  • Notify emergency contacts before deletion
  • Check for Zone ownership responsibilities
  • Screenshot important information before deleting
  • This cannot be undone - be certain
